There's a difference between giving thanks and being thankful. The first has to do with action toward someone, the second has to do with appreciation and gratefulness. Scripture says, "In everything give thanks ..." It does NOT say, "In everything be thankful." Since giving thanks requires an action, it is possible -- highly recommended -- that I give thanks to the Father for everything in my life. Whether what happens is good or bad (from my perspective), I am to give thanks even tho I may not be thankful for the situation. When I am obedient by giving thanks, God will comfort, encourage and bless me.
I am thankful, but I also give thanks, for the people and situations in my life. This hasn't been an easy year, but I am ever so grateful for the Lord's faithfulness and direction -- even when I don't feel like it.
